"Portanto a singular conexão entre Isaías, 1, 3; Habacuc 3, 2; Êxodo 25, 18-20  e a manjedoura, aparecem dois animais como representação da humanidade, por si mesma desprovida de compreensão, que, diante do menino, diante da aparição humilde de Deus no estábulo, chega ao conhecimento e, na pobreza de tal nascimento, recebe a epifania que agora a todos ensina a ver. Bem depressa a iconografia cristã individuou este motivo. Nenhuma representação do presépio prescindirá do boi e do jumento."

"There is no mention of animals in the Gospels," he wrote in the third and last volume of his biography of Jesus Christ, which like the previous two books is expected to become an international best-seller, with an initial print run of a million copies.

"There is no mention of animals in the Gospels"

is different than

"There were no animals in the stable that night"

or than

"The nativity scenes should not have any animals depictions"

... Which was what newspapers wrote in their headlines.

Seriously, do journalists even know how to READ? The pope JUST says there is no MENTION to animals IN THE GOSPELS. Well, gosh! He is telling the truth. Read the gospels and check if there are any animals mentioned there. Nope, there aren't.

Does that make the animal depictions there wrong? Nope. Why? Well, read the book if you want to find out...

Benedict writes in a new book on Christ that contrary to popular belief, Jesus's birth was not presided over by oxen, asses, camels or indeed any other beasts.

THE POPE has declared that the world's belief that donkeys and cattle were at the scene of the Nativity is false.

The leader of the Catholic Church has written a new book in which he slams the belief that animals of any kind were at the scene at the birth of Christ.

He wrote in the third and last volume of his biography of Jesus Christ: "there is no mentions of animals in the gospel".

I'll repeat myself, because you don't know how to read either:

"There is no mention of animals in the Gospels"

is different than

"There were no animals in the stable that night"

or than

"The nativity scenes should not have any animals depictions"

"parecem dois animais como representação da humanidade"
A mim sempre me disseram ser a companhia de Jesus.

The Pope attempts to clear up a number of misconceptions about the Christian faith including the existence of beasts and oxen at the birth but he does admit that the belief if so entrenched that it will be hard to get others to believe.

He added: "No one will give up the oxen and the donkey in their Nativity scenes."

The Pope however does maintain the existence of the 'virgin birth' and that it should be taken at face value.

He wrote: "It is an unequivocal pillar of Christian belief."
